4、 I Want to See the World

W: Can I talk to you for a moment, Tom?

M: Of course, Julia. Sit down. What is it?

W: I’ve decided to leave.

M: Leave?

W: Yes.

M: Oh, no. Is it because we’re moving out of London?

W: Well, yes. But there are other reasons.

M: I see. You never liked working here.

W: No, no. I’ve enjoyed working here. But ...

M: But what?

W: Well, I haven’t had time for other things. I’ve worked here for four years. And I’d love to do something different.

M: What do you mean, something different?

W: I want to travel. You know, I have never been to other countries.

M: Haven’t you?

W: No, I haven’t. I want to live abroad and learn to speak a different language.

M: Well, what can I say? I’m really sorry. But I understand.

W: Thank you, Tom.

5、 There’re Only Back Seats Left

M: Good morning.

W: Good morning. Can I help you?

M: Yes. Are there any tickets left for the Chinese Music Concert on the 28th, please?

W: Just a moment please. I think you’ve made a mistake. It’s on the 30th.

M: Really? I read about it in the paper today. I’m sure it’s said Chinese Music Concert on the 28th.

W: Oh, sorry. I thought you said Japanese Music Concert. The Chinese Music Concert is on the 28th, at 7:15. But I’m afraid there’re only back seats left and they’re 30 yuan each.

M: That’s OK. Can I have two, please?

W: How would you like to pay for these?

M: Check. Here you are.

W: Thank you and here are your tickets.

M: Thank you very much.

6、 Let’s Do Something Different

M: What shall we do this weekend?

W: Did you have something special in mind?

M: No, not really. I just thought it might be fun to do something new.

W: Do something for a change, you mean?

M: Yes, something different. I need a change.

W: I used to go shopping and have my hair done during the weekend.

And you usually watched the football games on TV.

M: Yes, you often have tea with your friends and I sometimes play cards

with my friends. We seldom do anything together. It’s quite unlike when we were first married.

W: Now, I’ve got an idea. Autumn is the best season in Beijing. Why don’t we go for a picnic this weekend? You invite your friends and I invite mine. We’ll go together.

M: Good idea. I would see about the car and you’ll prepare the food. But

are you sure you really want all our friends to come along?

7、 You Came to the Right Place

W: Hi, John.

M: Oh! Hi, Laura. What are you doing here?

W: Uh. I’m usually here on weekends. It’s my dad’s shop. So you are looking for a bike?

M: Yeah. Now that the weather is warming up, I thought I get some exercise instead of taking the bus all the time.

W: Well, you came to the right place. Do you know what you would like?

M: Well, I don’t want a racer or a touring bike or anything. Mostly I’ll just be using it to get me back and forth from work.

W: How far is that?

M: About four miles.

W: Are there a lot of hills on the way?

M: Some I guess. But maybe I should tell you at the front that I only got

150 dollars. Can I get anything decent for that?

W: Well, you are not going to get anything top of the line. But we do have

a few trade–ins in the back that are in good condition.

M: That sounds good.

W: And you are right. For the kind of ride you are going to be doing, the

most important thing is comfort. You want to make sure it’s the right

height for you. Follow me and I’ll show you what we’ve got.

8、 I’m Worried about My Car

M: Is this table on the corner okay?

W: Sure. We can sit here.

M: Gee. You’ve hardly got anything on your tray.

W: Yeah. I guess I’m just not that hungry.

M: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?

W: Well, I’ve been really worried. It’s my car. It’s in the shop again.

M: Really? What’s wrong this time?

W: I don’t know exactly. Something’s wrong with the brakes, I think.

M: Well, at least that shouldn’t cost you much to fix. Parts are cheaper for all the American cars like yours. Did the mechanic say how much it would cost?

W: He said he would call me with an estimate later on today.

M: Watch out he doesn’t try to take advantage of you.

W: What do you mean?

M: Well, some car mechanics, if they think that someone doesn’t know much about cars, they might try to overcharge that person.

W: Maybe so. But I trust this guy. He was recommended by one of my neighbors. He has done some work for me in the past and his prices seemed to be reasonable.

M: Oh, that’s good to know. Maybe I’ll try using him in the future. By the way, do you need a ride home after class today?

W: Oh, I’ll sure appreciate it. It’s really tough getting around without a car when you live off-campus.

9、 My Face Gets So Red

M: Hi, Sarah, what’s up?

W: Oh, hi. I just got out of a history class. I had to give a presentation.

M: How did it go?

W: Terribly. I’m sure I made a fool of myself.

M: Why? Weren’t you prepared?

W: No, it’s not that. I just get so embarrassed and nervous whenever I’ve to speak in front of a group of people. I stand up and my face gets red and then I get even more nervous because I know everyone can see me blushing.

M: It is not so bad to blush.

W: But it happens all the time. If the professor asks a question and I know the answer, I’ll blush like crazy if he calls on me. Doesn’t that ever happen to you?

M: No, not really. Maybe you should try to forget about the people. Look at something else in the room, like the exit sign.

W: I guess I could try that. But I doubt it will help.

M: You know we talked about this in psychology class. Blushing, even though it’s involuntary, is more or less a learned behavior.

W: What do you mean?

M: Oh, children hardly ever blush at all. And, among adults, supposedly women blush more than men.

W: I wonder why.

M: I don’t know. But I had a friend in high school, Brian Smith. It was really easy to make him blush. He turned red whenever a waitress would ask him for his order.

W: I’m not that bad. Well, I’ve got to get going for my next class. I’ll talk to you later.

10、 Have You Started Working on Your Biology Paper

M: Hi, Sue. Where have you been?

W: Oh. Hi, Dan. I was just at the library. I have to hand in my biology paper tomorrow.

M: Tomorrow? Oh, no, I thought it wasn’t due till Monday.

W: Oh. Don’t worry. It is due Monday. But I’m going away for the weekend and won’t be back till Monday night.

M: Oh, where are you going?

W: California. We’re having a family reunion. It’s my grandmother’s ninetieth birthday. So all the cousins and aunts and uncles are going. She planned the whole thing herself.

M: Wow. That’s great. How many people will be there?

W: Around sixty. My family is big and spread out but we’re pretty close.

So have you started working on your biology paper?

M: Yeah. I’m doing it on bees and how they’re able to recognize whether another bee is related to them.

W: How can they tell?

M: They use their sense of smell. The sweat bees guard their nests this way. If another bee approaches the nest, the guard determines if the new bee is familiar. If it is, it’s allowed to enter.

W: Interesting. Can other insects do this?

M: Well, the paper wasps can. Each wasp nest has a special combination of plant fibers and so the wasps that live there have a unique smell. Those two are the only kinds I’ve read about so far.

W: Well, you’ve still got time. It sounds like that the bees are picky about who comes to their family reunion.

A:So, I take a left after the gas station, onto what street?

A:Great! Can I send you a check?

B:Sure, a check will be fine. Just send it along with the lease after you’ve signed it.

B:I’ll see what I can do. Is that everything?

A:Well, there’s one more thing. I can’t get a dial tone on the phone; it’s dead.

B:Maybe there’s a short. Did you try the fuse box?

A:Yes, and that didn’t help either.

B:Then we have to call an electrician, don’t we?

A:Do you have a service number?

B:It’s on the refrigerator.

A:What about roast chicken? Or Chinese food?

B:I could go for Chinese food.

A:All right. Do we need to get anything?

B:I’m making a shopping list right now. What kind of vegetables would you like?

A:How about cabbage and potatoes?

B:Sounds good. In that case, let’s get some pork, some cabbage, and a bag of potatoes.

A:And what about dessert?

B:Why don’t we have ice cream?

A:Mmmm—sounds delicious. What kind of ice cream?

B: How about chocolate?

A:Great!

B: I don’t have much cash left. I’ll have to stop by the bank before I go to the supermarket. It might take me a while.

A:Take your time. We can eat later tonight.

7、 A Job Interview

A:Good morning, I’m Richard Li.

B:Please have a seat, Mr. Li. I received your resume a few weeks ago, and I must say I’m very impressed.

A:Thank you.

B:We’re a small financial company, trading mostly stocks and bonds. May I ask why you’re interested in working for us?

A:Your company has an impressive reputation. And I’ve always wanted to work for a smaller company.

B:That’s good to hear! Would you mind telling me a little bit about your present job?

A:I’m a head broker in a large international company. I deal with clients on a daily basis, handling all aspects of their accounts personally.

B:Why do you think you’re the right candidate for this position?

A:I have a lot of experience in the stock market. And I enjoy working with people. As a matter of fact, in my current job I’m in charge of a team of eight brokers.

B:Well, you might be just the person we’ve been looking for. Do you have any questions?

A:Yes. If I were hired, how many accounts would I be handling?

B:You’d be working with two other head brokers. In other words, you’d be handling about a third of our clients.

A:And whom would I report to?

B:Directly to me.

A:I see. What kind of benefit package do you offer?

B:Two weeks of paid vacation in your first year of employment. I believe you’re also eligible for medical and dental insurance. But this is something you should discuss with our personnel department. Do you have any other questions?

A:No, not at the moment.

B:Well, I’ll have to discuss your application with my colleagues, and we’ll get back to you early next week.

A:OK, thanks. It was very nice to meet you.

B: It was nice meeting you, too, and thanks for coming in today.
