Lesson 2 To London

Text

Listen to the dialogue and talk about it in pairs.

What can I help you today? My name is Steve.

My name is Sanchez.

Mr. Sanchez, what can I do for you today?

I would like to go on a business trip to London.

To London? When do you plan on traveling?

I plan on traveling at the end of the month. Today is September 10th. And I wish to travel on September 29th.

On September 29th. Let’s see. Oh… That’s within 21 days. Er… Most of the best airline rides just now are within 21-day or 31-day advance purchase. If you are traveling within 21 days the rides might turn to be a little higher. But let me check for you and see what’s available. If you must leave on 29th, the only advance purchase available would be a 7-day advance purchase. A 7-day advance purchase right now to London would be… let me check one moment for you. If you are traveling within 21 days, the only read available would be 595$ in each direction, so that would make a total of 1,190$ round trip.

OK, that’s ok.

That’s ok? That is ok with you? 1,190?

OK.

Em... If that...if that ride is available… if that ride is available for those days, let me go ahead and see if I can get that. One moment please. You said you want to leave on 29th September? And what was your return date?

October 15th.

Ok, October 15th. Em… Let me see. Do you have any preference to airline? Or most the rides are fairly similar on all the airlines. There isn’t much of difference. Em… Do you have any previous airlines?

If possible, British Airways.

British Airways. Ok, let me check. A moment. Let me give them a call.

Ok.

Em… This is Steve from NTC Travel club. I was wondering if you could tell me if you have one seat available for travel from San Francisco to London on 29th September? Ok, you do? Thank you. Is there return available on 15th October? Great, thank you very much. I’d like to hold that reservation if I can. Em… last name will be Sanchez. And excuse me, what was your first name?

Roberto.

Ok. First name is Roberto. Mr… Ok… And what was the ride on that? 1,190 round tripe. Thank you. And what is the ticketing dead line for that? Ok, ticketing dead line is set for 15th September. Ok, thank you very much. We will be calling you back with ticket numbers on that. Thank you. As right now, if you wanna go ahead and pay for it today we can go ahead and take care of it right now or if you wanna a couple of days to think about it. We can hold the reservation until then.

No, I can complete it immediately.

Ok, would you be paying by cash or credit card?

Visa.

A visa card. Ok, let me just go ahead in run the authorization through to make sure that every thing is ok. And we can get the ticket issued for you. Hold on just one moment.

Listening focus

Listen to the dialogue and answer the following questions.

1. What’s the name of the traveling agent?

2. Where is the man going?

3. When is he planning to leave?

4. How much is the round trip?

5. When is he planning to return?

6. Which airline is he going to fly with?

7. How is he going to pay for the tickets?

Lesson 3 Traveling abroad

Text

Listen to the dialogue and talk about it in pairs

How many different countries do you think you have been to?

Em… Once I made account on how many countries I had checked through, and it came to 28. So if you add on a few more for those where I haven’t hitched, I imagine it comes to about 40 by now.

About 40? And are there any of these that you feel you really would like to go back to?

Tow that I could actually live in I think. One would be the west coast of Canada, because I think that had everything to offer, it was rich culturally, it was very bright, it had a very pleasant climate, slightly improved on Britain, it had the rocky mountains behind, lots of coast line, a lot going on both day and night, a large university, and it was just near china, if you feel like crossing the border. The other place I like but more for holiday was Sardinia, which I found was the quietest, most unspoilt parts of Europe that I have seen.

What it is about traveling that makes you keep doing it?

I think it is the one time when I feel completely a life every minute of the day. I also feel I have tremendous amount of experience to bring back every time I have traveled. There’s so much to share with other people. I feel I have got a lot to give once I come back. But when I am actually doing it, you are free from all the bounds of routine. You are free from the assumptions people make about you. You are free from the inhabitations that cause you no too fully be yourself and enjoy yourself because of what people might think and so on.

But it can also be a little bit dangerous at times too can it?

It can certainly be dangerous if you do it alone. I avoid traveling alone where ever I can. I mostly go with people I know very well. And this is the part of travel discovering the people you are traveling with and discovering the differences and taste and the similarities of taste. But the most dangerous situation I found myself in was nearly being knifed here on Devon. But apart from that I was on a train in Hungary, where there is a murderer in the loo. And we were kept for tow hours, while they investigated why somebody has been stabbed in the loo. I’ve also slept voluntarily in a prison in Norway and another prison in Germany. And in one of them we were locked in and heard the prisoners shouting and banging on the doors. And that felt quite frightening. I managed to get right into the center of the Middle East war through no choice of my own. They wouldn’t let us out of plan and we were caught throughout the whole war in the country and couldn’t get around at all. That felt if you live on a knife edge. We were lying there quite coolly whether, if there was an air ride. We should actually go into the shelter or allow ourselves to be killed on the spot. And there are certainly risks. And I think more so when you do travel alone. So I try and avoid it.

Listening focus

Listen to the conversation and finish the following test

1. How many countries has the woman been to?

2. Which place does the woman seam to like most?

3. Considering that traveling can be dangerous at times, what does the woman do?

4. Which of the following is true about the woman?

5. Why does the woman want to keep traveling?
