大学英语4级考试精准听力法 短文理解精炼 Exercise One

[00:12.84]Exercise One
[00:15.16]Passage One
[00:17.29]Christmas is a holiday
[00:18.80]celebrated by Christians
[00:20.39]around the world.
[00:22.09]French children have a
[00:23.27]Father Christmas called
[00:24.60]Pere Noel.
[00:26.51]They leave their
[00:27.13]shoes out on Christmas
[00:28.36]Eve and want them to be
[00:29.80] filled with gifts;
[00:31.43]as many as children
[00:33.01]in the US hang up their
[00:34.63]Christmas stockings
[00:35.82]waiting for stocking suffers.
[00:38.16] Italian children have a
[00:39.92]kindly old woman
[00:41.30]who gives them gifts.
[00:42.84]Like American children,
[00:44.42]they leave their
[00:45.30]stockings to be filled with
[00:46.84]surprises. My mother,
[00:48.85]whose family
[00:49.61]originated from Sicily,
[00:51.46]remembers waking up on
[00:53.16]Christmas morning to
[00:54.39]find an orange in her
[00:55.85]stocking. If the family could
[00:58.11] afford it, she also gets a
[01:00.09]small doll. “Papa would
[01:02.61]bring out a big salami for
[01:04.44] our Christmas feast,”
[01:05.64]Mom said.
[01:07.06]“It doesn’t look like much
[01:08.16]now, but it was a special
[01:10.10]treat for us on Christmas.”
[01:12.59] The United States has
[01:14.00]created the most endearing
[01:15.61] holiday traditions which
[01:17.40]transcend cultures
[01:18.83]and even religions.
[01:20.73]Families gather for a feast,
[01:23.06] people go out caroling in
[01:24.58]neighborhoods,
[01:25.73]chestnuts are roasted over
[01:27.22] fires, and gifts are
[01:29.08]exchanged between
[01:30.20]families and friends.
[01:32.29]The spirit of the season
[01:33.44]unites all the cultures in
[01:35.85]United States. In Brooklyn,
[01:38.46]New York, where I grew up
[01:40.29]before moving to
[01:41.33]Connecticut, it was
[01:42.73]common to see a menorah
[01:44.28]next to Santa Claus
[01:45.75]in the store windows.
[01:47.40]I guess the true meaning of
[01:49.05]all these celebrations is
[01:50.88]that families come together
[01:52.41] with joy.
[01:53.81]Even though the beliefs are
[01:55.34] different, there is a
[01:56.66]collective spiritual
[01:57.70]experience which
[01:59.14]strengthens the
[01:59.97]ties among cultures.
[02:01.95]It’s wonderful about
[02:03.75]this time of year
[02:04.87]that we put aside our
[02:06.25]differences and
[02:07.42]recognize the spirit of
[02:09.15]love in all of us.
[02:12.94]Questions 26 to 29 are
[02:15.55]based on the passage
[02:17.12]you have just heard.
[02:19.65]26. What did French
[02:22.19]children call
[02:23.35]Father Christmas?
[02:39.83]27. What is the
[02:42.38]Christmas spirit in the
[02:43.55]United States?
[03:00.10]28. Where did the author
[03:02.85] grow up?
[03:18.66]29. What do the Christmas
[03:21.81]celebrations mean to the
[03:23.47]author?

[03:39.25]Passage Two
[03:41.35]When I arrived in America
[03:43.10]three years ago, I was
[03:45.23]surprised by the
[03:46.35] tremendous amount of
[03:47.65]advertising.
[03:49.15]But now I’ve come to
[03:50.77]realize that it is a creative
[03:53.11]and necessary part of an
[03:55.07]industrial society. I, too,
[03:58.26]want to improve my
[03:59.32]lifestyle and to buy better
[04:01.61] product.
[04:03.29]I look to advertising to
[04:04.94]show me how to do it.
[04:07.13]Deciding what to believe in
[04:09.07]advertising, however,
[04:10.81]isn’t easy. It seems to me
[04:13.35]that a person must
[04:14.53]purchase things
[04:15.50]with a lot of care.
[04:17.92]As a consumer,
[04:19.01]I want to get the best
[04:20.71]for my money.
[04:21.96]So I really have to
[04:23.78]understand the techniques
[04:25.27] of advertising. Otherwise,
[04:28.13]manufacturers would be
[04:30.14] able to sell me anything,
[04:32.47]whatever its quality may
[04:34.00] be. The creative aspects
[04:37.05]of advertisement,
[04:38.62]for instance,
[04:39.71]often cover up the
[04:41.03]defects or problems in
[04:42.72]products.
[04:44.48]I have learned this well,
[04:46.22]since I have made
[04:47.60]purchases and lost money
[04:49.91]because the items were of
[04:51.78]poor quality.
[04:53.80]The future advertising
[04:55.93]most likely will involve more
[04:57.95] public participation.
[05:00.12]In the future, if consumers
[05:02.83]really care about the
[05:04.43]quality of something
[05:05.72]as well as the quantity,
[05:08.31]many advertisers will
[05:10.38]begin to care more about
[05:11.93] what they are trying to
[05:13.52]sell.
[05:16.18]Questions 30 to 32 are
[05:18.62]based on the passage
[05:19.80]you have just heard.
[05:22.28]30. What do we learn
[05:24.64]about the speaker?
[05:41.36]31. Why does the speaker
[05:44.79]say that deciding
[05:46.02]what to believe in an
[05:47.48]advertisement isn’t easy?
[06:05.01]32. What does the speaker
[06:07.96] think future advertisers
[06:10.00]should do?

[06:26.14]Passage Three
[06:28.09]As America’s divorce rate
[06:30.21]has been rising,
[06:31.61]there are much more
[06:32.78]anxieties about marriage.
[06:35.25]Is it still possible to
[06:36.92]“live happily ever after”
[06:38.91]and if so, how can this be
[06:41.52]accomplished?
[06:42.92]How can you tell
[06:43.86]whether a partner
[06:44.81]who leaves you breathless
[06:46.22]with yearning will
[06:47.72]drive you to distraction
[06:49.19]as your spouse?
[06:51.61]Such questions suggest a
[06:53.19]need to examine our
[06:54.57]American way of
[06:55.65]mate choice.
[06:57.23]How do we select the
[06:58.41] person we will marry?
[07:00.39]For most 20thcentury
[07:02.42]Americans’ mate-choosing
[07:03.94]process is based on a
[07:05.96]bunch of dating.
[07:07.78]Examination of
[07:08.90]how we go about selecting
[07:10.54]mates thus requires us to
[07:12.30]consider the American
[07:14.08]dating culture.
[07:15.76]Dating is a curious
[07:16.92]institution. By definition
[07:19.50]it is an activity
[07:20.75]that is supposed to be
[07:22.07]separate from selecting a
[07:23.72]spouse. Yet,
[07:25.21]dating is expected to
[07:26.82]provide valuable experience
[07:28.88] that will help in making a
[07:30.66]“wise” choice of a marital
[07:32.60]partner.
[07:33.79]Does this combination work?
[07:35.93]How well dating “works”
[07:38.32]may be considered
[07:39.25]in a number of senses of
[07:40.97]this term. Is it easy or
[07:43.38]difficult to find
[07:44.38]somebody to go out with?
[07:46.58]Do dates mostly lead to
[07:48.28]enjoyable or painful
[07:49.99]evenings? However,
[07:52.00]these are not the
[07:53.24]aspects of dating I wish to
[07:54.92] consider. The issue here is
[07:57.41] whether dating works
[07:59.11]in the sense of providing a
[08:00.75]useful experience
[08:02.00]that helps pave the way
[08:03.58]for a successful marriage.
[08:07.80] Questions 33 to 35 are
[08:10.52]based on the passage
[08:12.00]you have just heard.
[08:14.80]33. Why are Americans
[08:17.91]anxious about their
[08:19.24]marriage?
[08:35.48]34. What should be done to
[08:38.22] answer Americans’
[08:39.30] questions about their
[08:40.90]marriage?
[08:57.01]35. What can we learn
[08:59.75]about the American way of
[09:01.71] mate choice?
