Conversation

Talking about sports in a homeless and immigrants shelter

Carol: Talking about sports is important to mant Americans.Knowing about sports can help you feel more comfortable in social and business settings. So, today I’ll ask you some questions about sports.Which sports are the most popular sports in the U.S.?

Christine: Baseball, basketball, and football. The intensity of competition in these three sports is unique to the U.S.

Carol: When you say “football”,do you mean American football or the game called football in other parts of the world?

Christine:Oh,I mean American football. International football is called “soccer” in America.Back home in South Africa ,soccer is called”football”.

Carol:Good! Please tell me more about American football.

Christine: The name of American football comes from”rugby football”.It is played by two teams, which are usually made up of all males. Each team has eleven players wearing helmets and other protective gear. America’s professional football organization is the National Footlball League(NFL).Most of the football players are big and strong.

Carol : I am impressed that you even know the origin of the word”football”.But what about the origin of the word “soccer”?

Christine: The word “soccer” comes from “association football” as opp to “rugby football.” Soccer is a popular game worldwide. I am a big soccer fan.

Carol: I enjoy watching both soccer and football. Do you like palying or watching basketball?

Christine:Basketball is my favonrite sport. I’ve always been tall for my age and began to play basketball with my older brothers when I was seven. Now I’m about 191 centimeters. At 2.54 centimeters to an inch, that works out to be a little over six feet and three inches. That’s not very tall fot a male basketball player, but it was usually tall enough when playing against other girl. I was on our high school basketball team before I come to the U.S.

Carol :Well, you’re lucky to be so tall!I’m only five feet and eight inches tall, which is only about 173 centimeters. I always wanted to be taller.

Christine:Maybe so ,but sometimes men get really nrvous around a tall woman.

Carol : Oh ,I guess you’re right .Some men sre even uncomfortable with my height. But our height isn’t something we can do much about.

Carol: No.I was on the cheerleading squad. Maybe that’s why I came to enjoy many different kinds of sports.

Christine: Isn’t cheerleading a kind of sport?

Carol : It sure is .Every year I had to compete to get on the cheerleading squad. Then there were also different cheerleading team competitions an the state national level. All the members on the cheerleading squad had to be in excellent physical shape. And we couldn’t get any bad grades in our clsses ,or we’d be suspended from the cheerleading squed.

Christine: That’s why high school sports keep a students so busy.

Carol : Very true .You stay focused and have to prioritize how you spend your time.

Christine: Time is valuable.

Carol Yes ,it certainly is .Being a cheerleader taught me how to be more efficient and effective in everything I do. OK,now for sme more questions. What do you know about the NBA?

Christine: The NBA ,or the National Basketball Association, is America’s profeesional besketball organization.Top American basketball players make huge sums of money for playing basketball. The also get rich making commercials to sell various products and services.

Carol: Why are many excellent basketball players from all over the world coming to play for the NBA teams?

Christine: Because these plauers achieve far more fame and earn much more money than they would if they stayed in their own countries. But NBA fame and money are the result of excellence in playing intensely competitive games. Injures, personality conflicts, drugs, and simply getting a little older can all contribute to a failure to preforn at the highest level. An NBA player’s career can end qiuckly. This relity is part of the compentition found in sports.

Carol: That’s a good anslysis, Christine! Want to add anyting?

Christine: Many Americans view life and sports as similae.Wa all get to play for a while, but sooner or later, new players will come along to replace us.

Carol : That’s ob_so-true, Christine!Now what about baseball?

Christine: No problem . In baseball ,a ball is hit and sunners advance around a diamond-shaped field. There is a base at each of the four corners. There ars two teams with nice players on each. Since this sport is over a hundred years old,it has contributed many words and expressions to the English language.

Carol: Could you give me some exaples?

Christine: The phrase “to get to first base” means to complete the first stage of a process. In baseball ,the phrase means to complete the first leg of the four sections of making a run and earning a point .When dating, people refer to getting a kiss as “getting to first base.” Business people sometimes refer to completing the early stage of a business deal as “getting to first base.”

Carol : That’s good .How about another example?

Christine: If you never had a chance to try to do something that you really wanted to do , you can say ,”I never even got uo to bat.”

Carol: You’re very good at this !OK.Now atough one. “three strikes and you ‘re out.”What does this idiom mean?

Christine: This refres to the three swings a batter normally gets to try and hit the ball . But is you’re not playing baseball and an American tell you,”Strike one,” it means you just failed to accomplish some goal and you hace only two more chances! If an American says,”Third strike and you’re out !” it means you’ve used up all your chances.

Carol: Good answer.I’m impressed. But why is baseball regaded as America’s national sport?

Christine: Many American children never play football , but almost everyone has played baseball with their family and friends or at school as part of physical education classes.Even people over seventy years old can play baseball .Maybe that’s why baseball is considered Ameica’s national sport.

Carol: I’m proud of you ,Christine . You’re been in the U.S. for only half a year, but you have learned a lot about American sport and culture .Keep up the good work. Now let’s listen to a commentary about an unusual, but umportant American sport.

Floating in English

Americans also enjoy many kinds of sports, such as bowling, skating, skiing, swimming, diving, skin diving, scuba diving, surfing, bicycling, car racing , drag racing, running, hang gliding, hockey, folf, and tennis. Gyms, health clubs, and swimming pools are found everywhere.

Air shows, with airplane acrobatics and even races, have long been an unusual sport that is an important part of American culture .When the Wright brothers flew the first powered airplane at Kitty Hawk in 1903. America began its long love affair with airplanes . Due to low population density and a strong interest in technology, America became an ideal country to promote aviation.

In the 1920’s,surplus World War I airplanes provinded thousands of Americans with flights from pastures all across America. Airports were soon built everywhere to promote this new form of qiuck and conventent transportation . For Americans to fully demonstrate the capacitiesof this fast evolving inevtion , air racing and acrobatic competitions were held. Millions of spectators came to sees the latest airplanes and meet the pilots who flew them, In the 1930’s airplane teansportation became a profitable industry.

After World War II, American interest and love for air shows increased. Technological innovation, military interests , the continued growth of parachuting, and powered hang gliders have made America’s air shows a popular and unusual sport. One Chinese tourist even said,” You haven’t been to America, if you haven’t been to an American air show!”
