感谢大耳朵网友"annyswallow"提供的听力原文

Lesson 10 The First Day at Work(就任新职)

"A good beginning is work half done."The first day at work is crucial. It's important to leave a good impression on your superious and colleagues at your first meeting. How can you shine the first day at work?It is nothing difficult.Behave properly, use correct language, learn necessary culture pips, and you will make it a good start.

Dialogue 1

A:Are't the new waitresses great?

B:Waitresses? Those girls are the poorest excuse for waitresses I've ever seen.

A:At any rate,I think they're a neat bunch of women.

B:Neat is the last word I'd use to describe them.Have you ever seen the way they wipe off the tables? The table ends up looking worse than when they started.

A:Well, next time you'll have to stop and show them the correct way to wipe.

B:Believe it or not, they will be the downfall of the hotel.

A:Oh,come on.

B:It's true.I already caught one of them breaking the rules. She was making a personal phone call.

A:My word,a personal phone call!

B:She said it was urgent, but a rule is a rule.

Dialogue 2

A:Good morning!

B:Good morning!

A:Are you the office manager?

B:Yes,I am.Who are you?

A:I was hired by the Personal Section and told to report here to work as a sales representative.

B:Oh,I see.What's your name?

A:My name is Frank Brown.

B:I'll tell Mr.Wang that you've arrived and he'll inform you of what you'll be assighed.

A:Thank you.Do you know when I'll be starting?

B:I believe you'll be starting today.

Discussion

A:Are you the new programmer?

B:Yes,I am.

A:Hi!I'm Kate Harrison.I work here too.

B:Hello,Kate.My name is Tom Song.

A:Have you worked in a software company before?

B:No,it's all new to me.I just graduated from college. What do you do,Kate?

A:I work in the information department.

B:How do you like it?

A:It's Ok.I get pretty tired,though.But I hope you'll like it here.

B:I sure will be like it here.I hope we'll become good friends.

A:We will. It's time to start work again.See you.

B:See you.

Debate

Is It Better to be Professional or All-round?

Obtaining a second degree is populer at colleges and many employers require that their employees be all-round.On the other hand, many college students exhaust themselves to learn one more major only to find they have neglected their own major .Which is better,to be all-around or to concentrate on one field?

A:A professional is a person with specialized knowledge and skill in a certain field whereas an all-around person is one with a wide range of knowledge and many skills.Obviously,an all-round person is more adaptable to the changing modern society.

B:I'm afraid that your definition for prefessional is too narrow.A professional is not one who only knows about his own field and knows nothing about other fields.Specialized knowledge in a certain field is based on a wide range of knowledge. So a professional is an expert in a certain field while an all-around person is one who can work in several fields. Both kinds of persons have their advantages and disadvantages, but since modern society is one with detailed Labor division,a professional is more useful.

A:But why do most universities offer double degrees and encourage science majors to take arts courses and arts majors to take science courses?

B:It's true that our university offers courses like Music Appreciation, but I learn those courses not to improve English, but to cultivate my interest, open my eye and make myself a man of good tastes so that I can have something to enjoy after work in the future.

A:Although a professiona. may have more knowledge in certain field,to get a job done in modern society calls for cooperation between different fields.Only an all-round person can take things as a whole and combine resources from different fields. So an all-round person is more creative.

B:But isn't the profound knowledge in a certain field a necessity for creativity?

A:Have you noticed that , in modern society ,more and more new technologies are produced in frontier branches of science? It is an all-round person who can work in more than one branch.

B:Don't forget if you are good at everything, you are good at nothing.Take Microsoft as an example,it has the best management personnel, the best software ersonnel and the best financial personnel. It is those prefessionals who make it one of the first-rate companies in the world.

A:But when Bill Gates an Paul Allen started the company, they worked at the same time as technicians, accountants and sales representatives.Aren't they all-round?

B:That's because when they started, they could not afford professionals. Now that the company is bigger, would Bill Gates be able to manage all that work by himself if the didn't have those professionals to help him?

Speech Master

There are often newcomers in a company. How to introduce the newcomers to others? The following brief speech may be helpful to you.

Before we start,I'd like to introduce John Wu,our new software engineer.Hohn Wu has first come to us from IBM,where he's worked for the past ten years. He has a lot of experience with the software industry----our directors are interested in this area,as you know---and aims to use the experience with us.I'm sure we'll all be more than pleased to have him on the team. Now,let's welcome John Wu with a big applause!

Do You Know It?

When you introdcue yourself, you say:"I'm..."or "My name is..."or simply "John Wu",sometimes adding a bit of extra information--- for instance "I'm the new assistant manager,Ken Liu",or "I'm John Wu , the software engineer."Then each person says:"How do you do"to the other --- it doesn't matter who speaks first. You usually shake hands when meeting someone for the first time,so when you say "How do you do",offer your hand.
