When Daiyu landed the bank from the boat, she was received by a sedan chair sent by Palace of Prosperity. She often heard from her mother that her grandmother’s home was very different from othes’。Recently she have seen several low-class maids who were dressed and dining surprisingly well. So she knew her mother’s remarks was true. Therefore, she became extremely cautious by not speaking one more word or walking one more step for fear that she would be laughed at if making some mistakes. After landing on the sedan chair, she was carried to town, during which she witnessed great prosperity of the town by looking out of the window. Having toured for half a day, she suddenly saw in the north of the street were squating two large stone lions, standing three big gates with beast heads carved on them, in front of which were standing ten-plus people gloriously dressed. But to her confusion, the main gate stayed closed and only the two side doors located in the east and west of the building respectively maintained open. Above the main gate was hanging a tablet reading “Supreme Ning Palace”. Daiyu knew it must be the home of her oldest uncle. She continued proceeding westwards, not long before she saw another glorious building with also three gates. It was the “Palace of Prosperity”, her grandmother’s home. But she could not went in the house through the main gate, but through the side door in the west. She was carried into the house by chair men, who walked for a while and then dropped her down and left. All old maids got off the sedan chairs and came up to serve her. There were three or four teenagers of some 17 or 18 came to carry the sedan chair again followed by the old maids until another door. Then all teenagers left and the old maids rolled up the curtain on the sedan chair and helped Daiyu out of the sedan. Daiyu leaned by the hands of the old maids and walked through the gate, the porch and then the hall where there was a gaint screen made of marble on a padauk pedestal. After walking around the screen they reached three small living rooms, at the back of which was located the main rooms, which included five decent bedrooms with delicately carved beams and walls. On two sides of the rooms there were rooms accomodating visitors standing along a long porch and numerious small rockeries. In front of the rooms were hanging a lot of cages keeping various parrots and thrushes and so forth. On the steps sat seveal young maids in red and green. When they saw Daiyu, they came up immediately with smiles and said, “My host, your grandmother is looking forward to your coming. Now you finally arrive!” then three or four men were hastily lighting up the lanterns and someone was conveying the message of Daiyu’s arrival to her grandmother.
When Daiyu entered the house, she saw an old lady supported by two maids’s hands came to her. She knew she must be her grandmother. When she wanted to bow to her grandmother, she was already hugged by her. Grandmother could not help weeping emotionally ,and all the others present were also crying, including Daiyu. After being comforted by others, Daiyu and her grandmother held up their tears. Then Daiyu bowed to her grandmother for respect. Her grandmother was so called Senior Lady Shi, mother of Jia He and Jia Zheng. (in the following article, we will use “Jiamu” to refer to Daiyu’s grandmother). Then Jiamu introduced all the relatives to Daiyu. Daiyu bowed to all of them. Then Jiamu said to the maids, “Go to call all my granddaughters up. Today we have an important visitor, so they do not need to study.” Everyone responded and two went to convey the message.
