Due to an upcoming business trip to the town, Ye Cheng found a nurse for his wife who suffered a traffic accident and were not able to walk freely for the moment.
When Ye was about to go to the labor market, he happened to see a maiden near his home holding a board telling that she wanted to find a job as a nurse. Ye came to her and after settling the salary, he asked the girl to his house and let her try to do the housework like cooking, cleaning and taking care of his wife. The girl did everything satisfactorily, so Ye, after telling the girl, named Hong Xiaoling, again to take good care of his wife, left home in a hurry.
Hong was very industrioius and cleaned the house free from dust. When she got everything done, she would chat with Ye’s wife, Mei Jing. Mei felt Hong was a really good nurse.
Ye kept a very large and ferocious dog. When Hong came to his house initially, the dog barked at her fiercely. But it became familiar with her after two days.
One night, the dog barked fiercely and waked Mei and Hong. Hong came out and saw a figure flash away. When she came back to the house and were asked by Mei about it, Hong said that it was a passer-by that made the dog barked.
After two days, in the morning, Mei and Hong got up and found the dog missing. Mei and Hong felt anxious and looked around the whole house, but neither found the dog. Mei said sadly, “The dog is a good house guard. I feel loss without it! Who is the fucking man stealing my dog?” Mei also knew that her dog would not eat the food given by strangers easily. But why would it disappear without any trace? Hong also felt concerned. Mei said, “It is too late now and I will call my friend tomorrow and ask him to bring me another dog.”
But the next day, Mei could not get her call through. What’s worse, she even could not find her cell phone. Hong also helped to look for it but failed. Mei began being upset and wondered why everything was in a mess.
Mei asked Hong to go to the Telecom company and ask someone to repaire the wire. After Hong came back, she told Mei that the repairman would come soon. But after they waited for a whole day, no one came at all. Without fixed phone and cell phone, they lost contact with outside world entirely. Worse still, the house was far from the downtown, which further made it isolated from the outside world.
Since then, Mei often heard some sound and noise downstairs. But due to her physical disability, she could not go down. So she could only ask Hong to have a look. But Hong also replied that there was nothing wrong. Finally, Hong complained about her, “Why do you always tell lies? I could see some people hanging around in my yard but you told me on one was there!”
Seeing Mei feel angry, Hong did not take it to heart and said, “I really could not see anything wrong. If you do not believe me, next time you can go down to have a look by yourself.” Only then did Mei realize that Hong was nothing good, but she could not live without her for the moment.
One day when Mei was dressing up, she found that one piece of her jewelries was missing. She was irritated and looked green in her face. She called Hong and asked her angrily, “Is it you who stole my jewelry?”
Hong shook her head and said, “How did I dare to steal your jewelry?” Mei wanted to kick her out of the house, but she could not find another one to replace her. Finally, Mei had to put all her jewelry away from Hong.
One day, Hong went to buy some food. Mei gave her sufficient money but Hong only bought some cheap vegetables back home. Mei asked about the destination of the money. Hong replied, “Now the price of the food is increasing all the time. So the money you gave me could only afford these vegetables.”
Next time when Hong went to buy food again, Mei gave her a little money purposely. But Mei only bought two cucumbers back. Eventually, Mei had to give her more money to buy food. Mei also realized that the rice and oil in the house were run out of very quickly and Hong asked for money to buy them frequently.
After a period of time， Mei surprisingly found that Hong bought more than ten boxes of instant noodles and put them in the garage. Mei asked her, “Where do you get the money to buy the instant noodles? Why did you do that and put them in the garage?” Hong responded, “Madam, I have a big appetite and the rice I eat in your home is far from enough. So I buy some noodles and put it in the garage so that I can eat it when hungry.” Mei knew that she was telling a lie but had no time to argue with her. Now she was only waiting for her physical recovery and her husband’s return. Then they would pay her back afterwards.
After a month, Ye still had not come back. Mei’s legs had almost recovered and she could walk a bit now. One day Hong came back home after buying some food and was sweating cats and dogs. Mei gave her a glass of juice, in which she put some sleeping pills. But Hong was too smart to drink it and only took a bottle of mineral water from her bag and drank it.
Mei knew Hong had a strong sense of self-defense, so she planned to take a taxi and ask her friends to help. But when she was about to go downstairs, she was stopped by Hong, who said to her, “You have not recovered totally, so you cannot go downstairs now.”
Mei said, “It is my personal freedom to go downstairs. I feel so bored here.” Hong stared at her angrily and said, “You can go downstairs, but if you get hurt, do not complain about me!”
Then Hong stood by Mei and pushed her gently with her hands. Mei felt stunned and knew that Hong was threatening her. Mei’s legs were not totally well and if she was pushed by Hong when she was in the middle of the stair, it would be fatal and she might have to go to hospital.
So Mei dare not go down any more and returned to her bedroom with great upset. She had no idea why Hong was so bad and why her husband had not appeared who had promised her to come back in half a month. A horrible though came to her mind that maybe Ye had another love outside and took the advantage of her broken legs and employed Hong to handle her.
Thinking of this, Mei became more cautious. She worried that Hong would use some tricks to harm her. But everything was going as usual. The most unusual thing was that Hong asked for a higher and higher living expense. She always moaned that the prices of food are soaring nonstop. Every time
Hong went out, she would locked the door and took away all the keys that could not been accessed by Mei.
One night, Mei heard some noises downstairs. So she went out of the room and was about to go down. But Hong was standing in the passage and said to her, “Do not go down or you will have danger.”
Mei could not bear any more and stretch her arms to push Hong. However, Hong had predicted all this and went away from her, leaving her falling on the ground. Luckily, she did not fall down the stairs, which was just one step near her. Mei was totally terrified and had to go back to her room.
Another month passed by and Ye finally came back home. Before Mei filed her complaint about Hong to her husband, Hong disappeared suddenly.
Then Mei told her husband about the odd behaviors of Hong all these days. After second thought, Ye understood everything and said to Mei, “Thanks to Hong, your life was saved! Otherwise, you would had been in great danger!”
As a matter of fact, Ye was a contractor. Due to a series of debt defaults, he could not pay the workers’ salaries timely. Those workers, without money to feed themselves and buy train tickets to go back home, harbored severe grudge and decided to revenge Ye. But due to Ye’s large and ferocious dog, their plans were foiled again and again. Ye understood everything. He had seen a piece of news in the newspaper that a worker, in order to get his salary back, exploded a bomb in the contractor’s house. Therefore, Ye decided to get his money back from the debtors and paid the workers.
At this moment, Ye and Mei found a letter left by Hong: “Dear Mei, my elder brother was a worker for Ye. Please forgive me for my unreasonable hurt done on you. The jewelry and cell phone were indeed stolen by me and pawned in Lingyun Pawnshop. The pawn ticket is under my pillow. The dog was taken away to another warehouse by me. The owner of the warehouse paid me for it. but tomorrow he will send the dog back. I used the money you gave me to buy instant noodles and vegetables….. But what I have done does not mean to harm you. Instead, It was to protect you. Now Ye has come back and it is time for me to leave. Dear Mei, if you grudge me, please think of those starving workers who have been working painstakingly but received no pay at last. Then you will feel relieved.”
Actually, Hong was terribly worried that her brother and his coworkers would do something bad. Coincidentally, she learnt that Ye’s wife was hurt in legs and needed a nurse. Then she came to Ye’s house as a nurse. She told her brother and his coworkers that she would try every means to feed them.
Then, she sent the dog away and opened the gate of the yard and the garage, putting lots of food and necessities inside. The starving workers could access them conveniently. As with the jewelry, Hong pawned it for the money used to cure a severely sick worker who had no money for medical treatment.
Thankfully, Ye was a conscientious contractor and asked the money back from his debtors and finally paid all the money back to the workers.
After knowing all this, Hong left silently. Having known the truth, Mei felt free from anger totally. She held her husband’s hands and said, “Don’t let it happen again, ok?” He nodded and said, “Yes. Such kind of life is really terrifying!”
